LOVING

Our Affirmation of Faith

Written for the people, by the people of Saint Mark, on the occasion of Laity Sunday 2008

LEADER: Sisters and Brothers, what do you believe?

PEOPLE: We, the people of Saint Mark believe that God is here with us, as a loving, forgiving and generous God. We believe that God is love, and that God’s love is unconditional, and that this love can work through us if we allow it. We believe that God’s love is a perfect love in an imperfect world.

We believe that God knows us, loves us and calls us by name. We believe that Jesus is God with us, Emmanuel, the Word of God made flesh. We believe that Jesus is a present help in time of trouble, and reconciles us to God and one another. We are thankful for God’s gift of Jesus as our pattern and role model. It is through Jesus that we understand more fully who God is, and Christ’s example shows us what God thinks and feels and believes about relationship with us, God’s own creation. We believe Jesus was alive and walked this earth, and in willingly laying down his life, Jesus conquered death.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, which is God’s abiding presence with us. We believe the Holy Spirit comforts us, and yet is a force that pushes us to action. We know the Holy Spirit is relentless, the hound of Heaven, and that the Holy spirit has the power to transform, to witness, and to shake things up. We believe that the Holy Spirit is our guide.

We believe that we are the church together, as a body of baptized believers, and that the blessings bestowed upon this church are proof of God’s love for us all. We believe that in the church, the seed of Christ’s teaching shall blossom in action for God and for all.

We believe the church is home, as our family of choice. The church is safe, and welcoming, and calls us to serve. We believe that as a community of faith, the church speaks with a strong voice when it bows to pray to God. The church where we gather to put our faith into action.

We, as a church, live in grateful response to all that we name about the Triune God. We believe the church is an expression of our love for God, and God’s love for us. Since the church is the Body of Christ, we are gathered together to act as a symbol to all that God is present in this community and in the world.

This we believe.

Hallelujah! Amen
